Scandal Fic - Sixty Seconds

Talk Southern
Okay - so I decided to watch Scandal. From the very first minute I was in love. Not just the President and his lover, but with the entire show.  Fast and sexy and really GOOD.  Can't wait for the next episode kind of good.  Just paid too much for 8 episodes on DVD kind of good.

I had also decided not to get sucked into another OTP.  CSI ended the way it should have - then they brought Sara back which just got strange.  Then there was Bones. WTF did they do to Bones?  And Castle - which is just too precious and doesn't need my assistance.  There was Detroit 187 which was cancelled for no reason I could find. Who cares if I was the only one watching?  And finally CM. There are not words to describe how I feel about that show and what TPTB did to my ship. It was evil and uncalled for. That is all.

So, after all that, I was just done. I was watching TV for the sake of watching TV and that was that.  Then there was Scandal.  And I hated Fitz and I loved Fitz.  I wanted to cry for Olivia and shake her just a little.  And all around that was the show itself and the plot twists and the dialog and the glamour and bat-shit crazy first lady.  WOW!

I was hooked.  Then I dragged mingsmommy into it (kicking and screaming).  And she likes it - she really likes it!  So maybe I can get her to write a little fic too.

This was my really long-winded way of saying, I wrote a drabble.  Yep - 200 words to tell you I wrote 100 words.  Go figure.

As usual, none of the characters belong to me.  This is just 100 words so there's no smut.  Really just a little hand holding.

Sixty tiny seconds...Collapse )

Happy May Day

who knows
It's not often that I write something I'm proud of.  Of the 100 or so stories I've written over the last 6 or 7 years (including all the ones that never saw the light of day) there are less than a dozen that I actually think are "good".  The link below is to one that makes that cut.  losingntrnslatn was kind enough to point out that today is Beltane and to remind me that this one was out there in cyberspace.  Just thought I would share it with all you GSR fans who may have never seen it.  I hope that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Stolen from too many people to name.  It just looked like fun.

Pick up the nearest book to you. Turn to page 45. The first sentence describes your sex life in 2012.

I have my Kindle laying here and a book that I picked up the other day because it looked like mindless reading.  I chose the book.  Death Dealer by Heather Graham.  My sentence is...

She loved things that were old and had a story.

In Honor of Our Veterans

Paget Brewster - Naughty
It seems like I haven't been here in forever.  But I was watching the Extreme Makeover that aired November 4th, and I had to come here and tell you all about this.

I'm not sure how many of you know or are related to someone who has served in combat, but these men and women don't always come back with scars that we can see.  Sometimes those scars are emotional.  Those are just as debilitating, if not more so, as the loss of a limb.  If you've never dealt with someone who is affected by PTSD, then you have no idea how hard it is to come back from that.

The entire 2 episodes of EM last week was about a soldier whose vehicle ran over an IED.  He was physically injured, but his biggest injury was PTSD.  Unable to function at home, he spent over a year in a treatment facility in California.  He lost a year of seeing his children grow up because anything could trigger an episode and he feared for his family's safety if he was there.

During his treatment, he received a service dog.  These dogs are trained specifically for veterans.  And they are trained by a program called Puppies Behind Bars and matched with veterans through their Dog Tags program.

I don't often ask for money for a charity, and I'm not asking now.  I just want to make people aware of this program and what they provide.  Go and check it out - decide for yourself.

Something Important

So I made a promise to losingntrnslatn and did the whole pinkie swear thing with mingsmommy.  So here goes nothing...

Something Important
Paget Brewster - Naughty

So, the hubs and I took a trip out to Jackson Hole.  It was very possibly the most beautiful place I've ever been.  We hit it at the right time of year - before the snow and after the summer tourists.  The aspens were brilliant and it looked as if someone had painted huge swaths of gold down the faces of the mountains.  We spent time in Yellowstone (we took an all day tour), and could have spent several more days without seeing everything.  From Old Faithful to Painted Pots to the other geysers and the wildlife, the place is amazing.  I'm not much of a mountain girl.  Give me a beach and a book (and maybe a beer) and I'm set.  But I truly fell in love with this area, even without seeing Harrison Ford.

Now, I did learn a few things while I was there, and I want to share them with you.

1. Just because you have money doesn't mean you have taste.  Honestly, even if the leopard print, zebra print and toile are all black and white you shouldn't wear them together.  Also, when you are pushing 50, the mini-skirt and knee high boots are a bad idea.  Finally, just because they make 'jeggings' in your size doesn't mean you should wear them.  (Wow, it's nice to get that off my chest.)

2. I like elk - to eat.  Pretty darned tasty. :)

3. There is a place where the rainbows actually touch the ground.

4. My idea of a great way to spend an afternoon would be laying on my back in a grove of aspen and watching the leaves dance on the wind.  (I know I've mentioned these trees before, but there is something so gorgeous about their fall color.  Also, the leaves appear almost translucent when the sun hits them.  Gorgeous!)

4a.  My idea of a NOT great way to spend an afternoon?  Strapping some form of board to your feet and flinging yourself off a perfectly good mountain.  Are those people crazy?

5. That when you WANT to see a bear, they are hiding.

6. A bison's tongue is black. I know this because one got REALLY close to our van (while my husband was hanging out the door taking pictures), and he looked like he was either going to kiss the hubs or was laughing because he made the human scramble.

7. I have camera envy.  Seriously, I have never seen so many tripods and telescopic lenses in my life.  Wildlife photography is serious business.  Or a really serious hobby.

8. The appearance of 1 bull moose and 2 cows having breakfast in an open field can cause a traffic jam Atlantans would be proud to call their own.  Yes, we saw Moose Jam 2011.

9. People are not smart.  When you come across a WILD animal that weighs as much as your car, you should never allow your children to run up to it.  Also, don't run up to it yourself.  Those things may look 'cute and sweet' but they will hurt you.

10. And last, but not least, there's no place like home.

I'd Like to Say Something Profound

Tears
But I got nothing...

Some of you may know that for the past 7 months I've been planning a wedding.  Holly, my (husband's) granddaughter, got married last Saturday.  It was a destination wedding which means I did all the planning and coordinating over the phone and online.  And then it all happened in a rush and now it's over.

It was a very emotional weekend.  It's harder than I thought to watch one of your babies truly leave the nest.  Despite the fact that I am in no way biologically connected to Holly, she is mine in every other sense of the word.  Seeing her there, in her white gown with her hair all 'done' and that smile on her face was both freeing and heartbreaking.  At some point I realized that the little girl who always wanted to sit in my lap and have me read her a story, the awkward girl with braces and knobby knees, the teenager who thought I was too stupid to walk and breathe at the same time - all of those are gone.  And in their place is a woman with a family of her own.  However, as much as I was ready for the entire event to be over, I wasn't ready to let her go.  I miss that little girl (not the teenager so much).

I honestly think she made a good choice - trust me I've seen her bad ones.  Our new inlaw is smart and hardworking.  He comes from a close-knit family.  And he so obviously loves Holly and her daughter.  Really?  What more could we ask for?  Still, who knew it could be this difficult?

How has everybody else been?  I feel like I've missed so much...
